I was surprised to see four distinct layers of nebulosity in this image. Of course there is the dumbell shape and the bubble shape of the two brightest layers. However, there is a third, but fainter layer that has interesting structure in it. Especially at the 10 o-clock and 4 o-clock positions that shows a kind of dark jet or axis; as well as what looks like a corona. Outside of that, there is a much larger and fainter nebulosity that shows up as a blue haze in this image that stretches out past the bright star at the 3 o-clock position (more to the right than the left). |
